Face Recognition Machine is a projection project that investigates human’s natural propensity to recognize human faces prior to anything else. It explores that inclination from four different perspectives: the portrait tradition in art history, the influence of famous faces in photography, the influencer wave on social media, and the author’s personal experience with social media. By juxtaposing faces with the often-overlooked still life, this project tells a narrative of how faces permeate human aesthetic history.

Research

The tradition of portrait is dominant throughout art history and continues into the age of photography and social media. People remember history, stories and events often through faces. Humans are human-form face recognition machines.
