Tale of Dragon

VR Experience Group Project | 2022

Tale of Dragon is a class project for Building Virtual World at CMU ETC.

Using the egg chair, a VR motion simulator, we created a fantastical VR experience of riding a dragon, hovering fast in the sky, and fighting a battle against the intruders.

The game entered ETC Festival 2022 and was one of the most popular games of the event.

Water Shader and VFX

River Shader

Features include:

  • Vertex position displacement to create waves

  • Two normal maps moving in opposite direction and different speed

  • Different colors for deep and shallow area using scene depth

Ocean Shader

Features include:

  • All of the river features

  • Foam layer also using scene depth

  • Different colors for areas closer to and further from the camera for more visual variation

Splash Effect

Features include:

  • Shader with vertex displacement and moving normal for the middle part

  • VFX Graph for the splash

Fire and Explosion VFX

Lighting

  • Sunset Lighting to create a sense of impending fire and battle

  • Volumetric cloud for the final fly through in the clouds

  • Special lighting for the battle ships
